    Reg Gasnier AM was an Australian rugby league footballer and coach.

    He played centre for the St George Dragons from to and represented Australia in a then-record 36 Tests and three World Cup games. He was the captain of the national side on eight occasions between – Reg is regarded as 'The Prince of Centres'.

    Reginald William 'Reg' Gasnier was born on 12th May (Mother's Day) in Mortdale, New South Wales, Australia.

    He was the firstborn child of William 'Bill' Gasnier and Violet Sutton. [1] At Sutherland Intermediate High School, Reg excelled at both rugby and cricket. He later attended Sydney Technical High School in Moore Park, Sydney (the school moved to its current location of Bexley, in the St George district, in ). He played rugby league for his local junior club, Renown United.

    Reg, aged 18 years, signed with the reigning premiers, the St George Dragons Rugby League Football Club for the season as a centre. After only six games in third grade, he was selected for his first grade debut, and after only five first grade games he was selected for New South Wales.

    • By the following year, he was an established member of both the New South Wales state side and the Australian international team. He was an important member of the dominant Dragons team that won eleven consecutive premiership victories. It was not long before he was known as 'Puff the Magic Dragon' and 'The Prince of Centres' for his high-quality all-round play.

    Reg Gasnier married Maureen Sullivan, who he had met whilst at Sydney Tech, in in New South Wales.

    Reg became Australia's youngest-ever captain in when he led Australia against England at 23 years and 28 days of age. In , he again toured Europe, this time as captain-coach of the Kangaroos. His career ended prematurely when he broke his leg during the first test at Leeds. He returned to the field in France, but in a minor game suffered a further break of the leg.

    This ultimately caused him to announce his retirement from playing, at the age of just 28 years.

    After retiring from the playing field, Reg became involved in the media side of rugby league, becoming a sports writer and broadcaster, and providing excellent analysis. [2]

    In , Reg was selected as one of the initial four post-war Rugby League Immortals of Australian Rugby League game along with Clive Churchill, Bob Fulton, and his team-mate, Johnny Raper.

    [4] In December that year, he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame[5] and in , he was inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame. [6] Reg was appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Queen's Birthday Honours , [7] the same year that he was awarded life membership of the St George Dragons club.

    He was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in October [8] and the Centenary Medal on 1st January in 'recognition of service to the sport of Rugby League'. [9] In , Reg was selected by a panel of experts at centre in the Team of the 50s. In February , he was selected as one of Australia's Greatest Players by the National Rugby League and Australian Rugby League to celebrate the code's centenary year.

    He was also named as one of the centres, along with Mal Meninga, in Australian rugby league's seventeen-player Team of the Century in April [10] He was made a life member of the Sydney Cricket Ground, and a plaque in the Walk of Honour there commemorates his career; in , a bronze statue of Reg was unveiled as the seventh at the grounds as part of the Basil Sellers Sports Sculpture project.

    In , Reg underwent major surgery to remove tumours from his neck and brain. He passed away, the day before his 75th birth anniversary, on 11th May (Mother's Day) in a nursing home in Miranda, New South Wales. [11] Reg was survived by Maureen, son Peter, daughter Kellie, five grandchildren: Sheri, Jack, Bryce, Erin and Mitchell, and his father.

    Maureen died on 30th September [2]

    Reg was the uncle of Mark Gasnier, who, like his uncle, played rugby league as a centre for St George ( games), New South Wales (12 games), and Australia (15 tests). [2]
